Matt Wolf / Exploring the Magic of Watercolor Painting

Meet Matt Wolf
Hi, I’m Matt Wolf and I’m here to share the magic of Watercolors with you! But let’s back up a bit first…I’ve been creating art since I was a kid, playing and having fun with all different mediums from Crayons to Clay. I even went to college and studied art and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design. But after college, something happened…I stopped playing and exploring and got caught up in the digital aspects of my career.
I’ve been able to build a successful Graphic and Web Design Studio (wyndetryst.com) over the past 20 years which is my “day job”, but I’ve always yearned for those days of playing with different materials by hand to balance the digital day to day that has become my career.
Enter Watercolor…
My first real “playtime” with watercolor as an adult came over 10 years ago when I attended a watercolor workshop for botanical painting. It was just a few hours, and quite honestly I didn’t pick up a watercolor brush until several years later. But I kept remembering how fun the medium was. Fast forward to 2020 with LOTS of extra time on my hands and I decided to give painting with watercolor a try once more. So I bought a few basic supplies and began painting and taking online courses. From nearly the first minute I was totally hooked. There really was magic in mixing the paints, seeing the colors merge and blend and transform on the paper. So I kept painting, and learning, and of course buying more art supplies (which is one of my favorite pastimes). I took a few detours along the way into oil and colored pencils, but I kept coming back to watercolor. And since I’ve been mostly focused on learning as much as I can about the medium and growing as a watercolor artist.
I decided to start sharing my work, knowledge, and experience for a few reasons:
-
I want to share my love of watercolor painting with others, especially people just starting their journey into art or watercolor painting. I have had (and continue to have) many valuable teachers that have helped shape me and I want to share what I’ve learned (and continue to learn) with you.
-
I am all over the place with my painting. Some days it’s good, and some days it’s really bad. I want to share it all, because this is the best way to learn, and stay motivated. So much work we see shared by other artists is the perfect, unblemished work which is great and can be very inspirational, but I want to share it all, so that you see EVERYONE goes through the process of ups and downs and also growth.
-
I LOVE watercolor supplies, books and educational resources and I want to share these with you. I enjoy this part just us much (and sometimes more) than the actual painting itself, so why not spread my knowledge with others right?
So join the conversation and remember the only rules that apply here are:
-
Be open-minded
-
Be playful
-
Be curious
-
Be kind
I look forward to sharing this magical journey with you!
